If you are planning to install a pond in your garden, you will want to know whether to use a 300 gallon pond liner or concrete one. The reason is that there is some difference between the two. A pond liner will help keep your water clean and free of debris and leaves, while a concrete pond liner helps protect the water against cracking and other problems that occur with concrete. Concrete can crack over time from getting wet or being dried out while a pond liner will not crack but will be affected by weather and debris.
So, which one is better? It depends on a few things. In most cases, a concrete pond liner will be preferred because it is stronger and will not crack under normal conditions. On the other hand, if you have a large water volume and/or if you are putting the pond in an area that experiences a lot of wind, then a pond liner will be better because it will provide better resistance to corrosion and water damage.
How should you prepare your pond for installation of a pond liner? The first thing to do is to remove any existing vegetation. This includes any trees or shrubs as well as any rocks or steps and other structures on your property that may cause the water to contact the ground. If you don’t do this, the water will pool around the edges of the pond and will cause the sides of the pond to corrode and eventually collapse.
After the vegetation is removed, you should remove all loose gravel and pebbles from the area. You should also take away any rocks or steps that may have sunk into the gravel. Once this is done, you should spread at least one foot of organic mulch over the entire area. An example of this mulch would be Bermuda grass or woodchips. Both of these mulches have nutrients and water-retaining qualities that will help keep your garden pond green and beautiful.
Next, you should add a layer of garden pond liner to the bottom of your pond. This layer will prevent the organic mulch from blowing away in heavy winds. Garden pond liners are typically made with a PVC backing, which makes it easier to install and also allows it to remain flat on the bottom of your pond.
If you plan on using an above ground garden pond liner, there are a few things you need to keep in mind. First, you should avoid any garden pond plants that might be growing near the pond liner. These plants can actually break free from the plastic and grow instead near the surface of the water.
Secondly, you should never allow the pond liner to come in direct contact with the water supply. Any materials that sit on top of the pond liner and/or get into the water cannot be raked by a fork or scoop. Instead, you should use a net to cover any bare spots. Never place a broom handle or garden rake on top of the pond liner either.
Finally, you should be careful when moving debris out of your garden pond. It is easy to miss the smallest bits of debris, so you may not notice the water is not as clear as you thought it was. Once you have gotten rid of all the excess pond materials, you can then pour the water into your new fish pond. The new addition will look clearer and deeper the next day and will be ready to start enjoying!
