How do I get better at landscaping? Landscaping is a wonderful hobby and I’ve enjoyed it for many years. It’s a good mental exercise, allows you to spend time outdoors, relax and reconnect with nature. It also gives you a unique opportunity to make your own private oasis out of your own yard. But how do I get started?
There are dozens of good landscaping ideas that can be implemented to create a beautiful oasis in your own backyard. Some of the best landscaping ideas I’ve seen were illustrated in a book called “Gardening Tips For Homeowners”. In this book, the author provides over forty landscaping design ideas, along with easy to follow landscaping instructions. Some of the ideas included:
Gardening Design I love the landscape design idea of incorporating hardscapes such as rock walls and boulders into your landscaping. Rock walls make an interesting border, and if you have children they’ll love it. They will also enjoy the privacy that a rock wall provides, allowing them to sit and play in the shadows while you are working in your yard. You can also make use of landscaping borders by placing wooden planters around your garden area.
Water Gardens You can design a beautiful water garden to really enhance your landscaping design. With the proper design, you can create a “shoreline”, which will serve as a starting point for other landscaping ideas. A “water garden” provides an excellent place to swim and relax, as well as to plant low-maintenance, water-conserving shrubs and flowers. The beauty of a water garden is that the water can be reused for fish pond or bird bath maintenance, and because of its natural setting it’s a perfect place to bring a visitor like a bird watcher who may want to learn more about your yard and garden.
Plant Selection For most people, picking the right plants for your landscaping is probably one of the trickiest parts of the process. Plants that are perfect for your yard will require some research. Consider what season they’ll be growing in and whether or not they’ll grow fast or slow. How fast does your yard grow? What types of plants are hardy? All of these questions will impact what you choose to plant in your landscaping, so be sure to research each plant you plant.
Landscaping is an enjoyable pastime, but it does take a lot of hard work. Just like any hobby, landscaping requires that you put in the necessary time and energy to learn all you can before you can truly become an expert. By learning as much as you can about landscaping design and tips you can use, you will increase your chances of success. With some hard work and the proper tools, you can design a beautiful landscape that you can be proud of.
