Many gardeners wonder if a flower bed should be higher than a lawn. There are many good reasons why a flower bed could be higher than a lawn. Most lawns are watered quite heavily and allow weeds to grow in the ground. This means that a tall flower bed could provide twice the shade and nourishment that a shallow, sandy lawn can provide.
One advantage of a flower bed is that you will not need to pull weeds out of the ground. Many people have tried to do this and found that their efforts often ended up being a failure. You can also be better able to fertilize and weed protect your flower bed because you will not have such an issue with weeds in the grassy layers of the soil.
There is also the issue of maintenance. A flower bed is generally much easier to maintain than a lawn because you do not need to mow the grass. You simply plow into the dirt and go. While this may be easier on the back yard, it is much less desirable for the flower bed.
It can also take more effort to keep a flower bed in good condition than it does to maintain a lawn. In addition to the work that you have to do mowing the lawn, weeding and watering, you will need to apply insecticides and fungicides to the flower bed as well. This will kill off any weeds that are already in the ground. However, this also means that the flower bed has to stay healthier than the lawn so the bug and chemical control will not be as effective. Some people who try to use chemicals on flower beds often end up hurting the flower bed itself because they tend to apply too much of the chemicals. This makes the soil much more acidic and susceptible to harmful insects and pests that can destroy the entire flower bed.
The other issue with spraying the flower bed is that some of the flowers that you want to grow are not going to be visible if you do not get the right timing. For instance, if you are trying to grow tulips you might not be able to get them before they bloom. You might have to wait until the end of May or the beginning of June in order to get them to bloom. This is something else that you have to consider when you are trying to decide whether or not to plant a flower bed in your yard.
Another reason that many people are not happy with planting a flower bed is the amount of time that it takes to care for it. If you are planning to have flowers in your yard for an extended period of time, then you might want to seriously think about planting a flower bed. Most flower beds are fairly easy to care for and require only water and fertilizer to survive. You do not have to put in as much work as you would with a lawn, but you will need to be somewhat responsible when it comes to the maintenance of the area.
There are many benefits that come with having a flower bed, including being able to plant anything that you want in the area. You can choose from a variety of flowers that you want to plant, including wildflowers, shrubs, and even trees. However, you also have to take into consideration how much space you have to dedicate to the flower bed. If you have a very small yard, then you should probably opt for a flower bed because you should have very little trouble tilling the area and taking care of the grass in the area.
On the other hand, if you have a larger lawn or an extra large flower bed, then you might want to consider planting something a bit more traditional like a tree. You will also have to think about what type of tree you want to plant. Most flower beds will be planted with one type of tree in mind, but there are some exceptions. Check with the nursery that you’re going to purchase your flower bed from and they should be able to give you some ideas on what types of trees are available to plant in the area.
